3,000 tons out through Hvide Sande Port

Stiesdal Offshore has shipped seven components for a floating wind turbine foundation through Hvide Sande Port. The elements weigh from 355 to 564 tons each, totaling 3,000 tons. They were sent out in two batches with MV Hilke, the largest cargo ship that has ever called at the port.

The elements were on a docked heavy cargo area with a carrying capacity of 18 tons in flat load and 50 tons in point load. The elements weighed from 355 to 564 tons per element.

Two years of planning before the first ship docked

The collaboration between Stiesdal Offshore, the transport company BMS with Torben Rafn, and Hvide Sande Port began long before anything was loaded. The dialogue between the three parties lasted over two years.

The planning covered arrival and storage space for the elements, sorting from storage to dock and ship size and draft, clarified in dialogue with the pilot. There also needed to be control over safety conditions during loading and a communication plan for the media and local area.

Shipping with the port's largest crane vessel so far

MV Hilke is a multi-purpose crane vessel. 133 meters long and 23 meters wide, with two cranes of 450 tons each and a tandem lift of 900 tons. The draft at departure was 6.65 meters.

The vessel loaded the foundation components in two rounds. It is the largest cargo ship that has ever docked at Hvide Sande Port.

Space for multiple types of goods simultaneously

Hvide Sande Port maintained a fixed storage space close to the quay for the Stiesdal project. At the same time, the shipping had to be coordinated with other types of goods that were arriving at the port in the same period.
